GCSE English Language and English Literature

Two qualifications, two different skill sets. Our English tutors specialise in both, and will pinpoint where your child is losing marks in each section.

GCSE English Language

Unseen texts, two papers

An unseen text is an extract your child has never encountered before. They have to read it in the exam hall, analyse how the writer builds tension or shapes an argument, and then produce their own writing under time pressure. There is no content to memorise, so students have to rely on technique instead.

Our tutors work through unseen extracts and timed writing every week until that technique feels routine. Every piece is marked against the real mark scheme, so your child knows the grade, the reason for it and what to change next time.

GCSE English Literature

Set texts, closed book

Knowing the text is the starting point rather than the finish line. Your child studies the texts for two years and then sits the exam without them, so every quotation has to come from memory and be worked into an argument.

Our tutors work in depth on the major AQA set texts, including Macbeth, An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, Jekyll and Hyde and the poetry anthologies, and cover the Edexcel and IGCSE lists in the same detail. Exam Boards and Qualifications

Not all GCSE English courses are the same.

Question wording, set-text lists and mark schemes differ from board to board, and a tutor who teaches your child's exact specification every week makes a measurable difference. When you enquire, we ask which board your child's school follows and match accordingly.

AQA

The most widely taken English specification in the country, and the one most of our students sit. Two Language papers and two Literature papers, each unique. Our tutors work with these papers regularly and know how to prepare students for each one.

Edexcel (Pearson)

A popular alternative with its own text list and paper structure. Our Edexcel tutors know its particular approach to unseen texts and comparison questions, and prepare students specifically for it.

OCR

Less commonly taught, and covered in the same depth. OCR sets its own paired-text approach in Literature, which rewards students who can hold two texts in mind at once and compare them with confidence.

WJEC / Eduqas

Taken widely in Wales and by a growing number of schools in England. Our tutors know where its assessment objectives are weighted differently, and where students lose marks by revising to the wrong specification.

What Our GCSE English Tuition Covers

01 Reading and comprehension The foundation of both papers: reading closely, inferring meaning and analysing how writers achieve their effects.

Every English paper begins with reading. Our tutors help students move beyond describing what a text says towards analysing how it works: the effect of word choices, sentence forms and structure, and how writers shape a reader's response. These are the skills that carry the highest-mark questions on both Language papers and every Literature essay.

02 Creative writing Narrative and descriptive writing that stands out, planned and delivered under exam conditions.

The creative writing question is worth as much as the entire reading section of Paper 1, yet many students go into the exam without a plan. Our tutors teach a reliable approach: generating ideas quickly, structuring for effect, controlling sentences and vocabulary, and leaving time to check the technical accuracy marks that are so often given away. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are marked here, and we treat them as marks to be won.

03 Transactional and persuasive writing Articles, letters and speeches that match register to audience and purpose.

Paper 2 asks students to argue, persuade and inform in real-world forms. Our tutors work through each form's conventions, how to adapt tone for different audiences, and how to build an argument that sustains itself across a full response rather than running out after two paragraphs.

04 Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel Closed-book essay technique for texts witch challenging prose.

Writing about Macbeth or A Christmas Carol without the text in front of you is a distinct skill, and one where technique mastery is essential. Our tutors will help your child learn techniques that make revising easier and more effective: targeted rereading, quotation banks organised by theme and character, and essay practice that weaves context into an argument.

05 Modern texts and drama Theme-led revision and essay planning for texts such as An Inspector Calls.

Modern texts reward students who can organise their knowledge by theme and idea rather than by plot. Our tutors help students build flexible essay plans that can be adapted to whatever the paper asks, so nothing on exam day comes as a surprise.

06 Poetry: anthology and unseen Comparison technique for the anthology and a repeatable method for poems students have never seen.

Poetry is where many students feel least secure. For the anthology, our tutors build comparison grids across the poems so links come readily in the exam. For unseen poetry, they teach a step-by-step method that works on any poem, turning the question students most often dread into a familiar one.

07 Spoken language endorsement Preparation for the presentation every Language student delivers.

The spoken language section is reported separately from the GCSE grade, and it is a valuable, low-pressure opportunity to build confidence in structuring and delivering ideas aloud. Our tutors help students choose a topic, shape a presentation and prepare for the questions that follow.

08 Exam technique and mark schemes Timing, question strategy and understanding exactly what each assessment objective rewards.

Strong English students often underperform for reasons that have nothing to do with ability: spending twenty minutes on a four-mark question, or writing brilliantly about language when the question asks about structure. 09 Pushing for grades 8 and 9 What separates a grade 7 essay from a grade 9, and how to close the gap.

At the top of the mark scheme, examiners look for conceptual arguments, precise quotation and a sophisticated grasp of writers' methods.
