ESAT Tuition

Structured One-to-One Preparation for the Engineering and Science Admissions Test

What ESAT Tuition Involves

The ESAT assesses more than A-level knowledge. Strong performance requires the ability to apply mathematical and scientific reasoning to unfamiliar problems quickly, accurately, and without a calculator, across multiple subject modules taken back-to-back on the same day.

The ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) is a computer-based admissions test consisting of three 40-minute multiple-choice modules, each containing 27 questions. Mathematics 1 is compulsory for all candidates. The remaining two modules are selected based on the course applied for — engineering applicants at Cambridge, for example, must sit Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics, with no optional alternatives. Scores run from 1.0 to 9.0 per module. There is no pass or fail, but for courses at Cambridge, Imperial, and Oxford, ESAT scores play a central role in shortlisting decisions for interviews — making structured preparation a significant advantage. Our ESAT tuition is designed to help students understand exactly what each module demands, develop consistent problem-solving strategies, and approach the test with the confidence that comes from genuine preparation rather than last-minute drilling.

How Our ESAT Tuition Works

Our ESAT tuition follows a structured, one-to-one approach tailored to each student's course, target universities, and preparation timeline.

The focus is on progressively building genuine scientific and mathematical reasoning ability, not simply working through past papers without a strategy. Throughout the tuition programme, our tutors will help students to:

  • Assess current ability across the required ESAT modules through an initial diagnostic
  • Identify priority areas within Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology depending on course requirements
  • Teach module-specific problem-solving techniques and approaches to unfamiliar question types
  • Practise under timed, no-calculator conditions that accurately reflect the real test environment
  • Review and refine performance as the test date approaches

Lessons are delivered both in-person and online, allowing flexible scheduling and consistent support regardless of location.

Our Comprehensive ESAT Tuition Programme

Our ESAT tuition programme is designed to provide both structure and flexibility, ensuring preparation remains focused and efficient across all required modules.

What's included:

  1. Diagnostic assessment to identify starting level and priority areas across the student's specific module combination
  2. Personalised lesson plan tailored to target universities, test sitting, and subject profile
  3. Module-specific strategies for Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as required
  4. Timed practice under exam conditions, reflecting the no-calculator, back-to-back module format of the real test
  5. Detailed feedback and progress tracking to support continuous improvement

For students who require broader application support, ESAT tuition can be combined with guidance on personal statements and engineering admissions strategy through our Engineering Admissions Support service.

Our ESAT Tutors

Our ESAT tuition is delivered by experienced tutors with strong mathematical and scientific backgrounds and first-hand knowledge of the admissions test landscape at Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, and Oxford.

Why Choose Ivy Education?

Since 2010, Ivy Education has supported hundreds of students applying to competitive economics and mathematics degrees at leading UK universities.

Our ESAT tuition combines rigorous subject preparation with a clear understanding of how each university uses test scores within the admissions process.

We work closely with students and families to ensure preparation is realistic, structured, and appropriate to each student's course requirements and timeline.

Key reasons families choose Ivy Education include:

  • Over 15 years' experience supporting competitive university admissions
  • One-to-one ESAT tuition tailored to each student's module combination and course
  • Tutors with strong STEM backgrounds and admissions test insight
  • Clear communication and ongoing support throughout preparation

Our Process

Tailored ESAT Tuition — Step by Step

1. Initial Discussion

We begin with a consultation to understand your target universities, chosen course, and required ESAT modules. A diagnostic session then identifies current ability across each module, so tuition time is focused precisely where it will make the most difference.

2. Bespoke Study Plan

Your tutor designs a structured lesson plan based on your module requirements, test sitting, and available preparation time. For Cambridge applicants sitting in October, early planning (ideally from the summer before Year 13) is strongly recommended.

3. Module-by-Module Skill Development

Through one-to-one sessions, students develop the problem-solving and reasoning techniques required for each ESAT module. Tutors provide live feedback and help students build systematic approaches to question types rather than relying on recalled methods that may not transfer under pressure.

4. Timed Practice & Mock Sessions

Students complete practice sets and full timed module simulations under no-calculator exam conditions. Tutors review results to identify patterns, address weaknesses, and refine technique before the real test window.

5. Final Preparation & Admissions Integration

In the final phase, tutors provide advanced practice simulations across all three required modules and strategy coaching to ensure students approach the ESAT calm, confident, and fully prepared for the demands of the test day format.

ESAT Tuition - Frequently Asked Questions

The ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) is a computer-based admissions test required for engineering and science applicants at Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, and Oxford. It consists of three 40-minute multiple-choice modules — Mathematics 1 (compulsory for all), plus two further modules selected based on the specific course applied for. See our ESAT revision guide.

Engineering applicants at Cambridge are required to sit Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics.  All three are compulsory with no optional substitutions. Module requirements vary by university and course, so students should always confirm the exact combination required on the admissions pages of their target institutions before registering.

No. UAT-UK permits only one ESAT sitting per UCAS admissions cycle. There is no resit option within the same application year, which makes focused, structured preparation particularly important from the outset.

Yes. Cambridge requires all ESAT applicants to sit in the October window. The January sitting is not available for Cambridge applicants, and missing the October registration deadline will invalidate an application. Oxford applicants must also sit in October. Imperial applicants not applying to Cambridge or Oxford may choose either the October or January sitting.

The ESAT draws on A-level content in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, but tests application and problem-solving under strict time limits rather than memorised methods. Each module allows just under 90 seconds per question with no calculator. Success depends on speed, accuracy, and the ability to approach unfamiliar problems systematically; skills that require targeted practice beyond normal A-level preparation.

We begin with a diagnostic to assess current ability across the student's required modules, build a tailored study plan, teach module-specific strategies, run timed practice sessions, and review performance in detail after each mock to drive targeted improvement ahead of the test.

Most students benefit from beginning structured ESAT preparation at least 8–12 weeks before the October sitting. For Cambridge applicants, starting preparation over the summer before Year 13 is strongly recommended, as the October registration deadline falls in late September and leaves little time for reactive preparation.

Yes. For students who need it, ESAT tuition can be complemented by our full engineering admissions consultancy — covering personal statements, university selection, and interview preparation — ensuring all parts of the application are aligned and well-prepared.

Yes. The ESAT is delivered through Pearson VUE test centres in over 180 countries, and we regularly support international applicants with ESAT preparation, UK admissions requirements, and broader application strategy.
