Step-by-Step: The UK University Admissions Journey

Here is a comprehensive rundown of your UK University Admissions Journey:

1. Explore courses & attend open days

Your university journey begins early, usually around Year 11 or the summer before Year 12.
This is the ideal time to start exploring different subjects, attending university open days, and thinking about what kind of degree best suits your interests and goals. Begin keeping notes on courses, entry requirements, and locations so shortlisting feels easier later on.

2. Start your personal statement

The summer before Year 13 is the perfect time to begin drafting your UCAS personal statement.
Use this period to reflect on your academic strengths, super-curricular activities, and reading that supports your course choices. Early drafts allow plenty of time for feedback and refinement before school deadlines arrive.

3. UCAS applications open

UCAS typically opens for submissions in early September of Year 13.
By this point, you should have your five university choices finalised and your personal statement close to completion. Getting your application submitted early gives you breathing room to focus on any required admissions tests or interview preparation.

4. Oxbridge / Medicine / Veterinary deadlines

If you’re applying to Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Veterinary Science, or Dentistry, your UCAS application must be submitted by mid-October.
These courses often have additional assessments and interviews, so start preparing well in advance. Many students work with a tutor or mentor to practise interview techniques and admissions test strategies.

5. General UCAS deadline

For most other UK universities and courses, the main UCAS deadline falls in late January.
Even if your school or college sets an earlier internal deadline, aim to submit well before the cut-off to avoid last-minute issues. After submitting, focus on achieving the predicted grades required for your offers.

6. Interviews & offers

From spring through summer of Year 13, universities may invite you to interviews, portfolio reviews, or assessment days.
Once decisions start coming in, you’ll choose your firm and insurance offers. If things don’t go as planned, you’ll still have opportunities to apply through UCAS Extra or Clearing later in the cycle.
