What is the ACT?

The ACT (American College Testing) exam is a standardized test used in the college admissions process in the United States. Like the SAT, the ACT is designed to assess a student's academic skills in areas such as English, math, science, and reading. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions and an optional essay section. The ACT is scored on a scale of 1-36, with the average score being around 20. Many colleges accept both the ACT and SAT as part of the admissions process, and some students may prefer the ACT if they feel more comfortable with its format and content. Ivy Education offers personalized tutoring programs to help students prepare for the ACT exam and achieve their best possible score.

When should you take the ACT?

The ACT should be taken at some point in the penultimate year of secondary school (or Year 12 or Lower 6th or Grade 11). Ideally, a student should prepare for the exam over the summer before the penultimate year, and then takes the exam in October, November, December, and January with a final score locked in before end of year exams approach. Then, subsequent dates can be used to take subject tests and push a good score to a great one. Furthermore, come time to write the application in US universities, a student knows which schools are in range and can select early admissions and regular admissions targets.

Sometimes students continue to take the exams through the first half of the final year of school if the exam is proving challenging or a decision is made to switch the choice of exam.

ACT Exam Dates

The ACT have exam dates roughly once per month. The exams can be taken any number of times. Schools usually superscore which means that they take the best individual section scores across all the dates that the exam was taken. Historically, schools looked for students who performed very well on their first or second try, but this has become less relevant with the new exam format.

ACT tutoring typically covers all four test sections—English, Maths, Reading, and Science, along with optional Writing support. Lessons focus on content mastery, test-taking strategies, timing, and practice under exam conditions.

A tutor provides personalised instruction, identifies areas for improvement, teaches proven strategies, and helps build confidence. Tailored guidance ensures more efficient preparation compared with self-study alone.

Most students prepare for 8–16 weeks, depending on their starting point, target score, and weekly study time. Tutors can assess your current level and create a preparation plan that fits your timeline.

Target scores depend on the universities you’re applying to. Competitive universities often look for scores in the 30+ range, while others may require mid-20s. An experienced tutor can help set realistic, strategic goals.

Yes, Ivy Education provides online ACT tutoring with interactive tools, digital resources, and practice materials. Online sessions can be just as effective as in-person tuition.

Students generally take between 4 and 8 full practice tests before exam day. These help build familiarity, refine timing, and track progress.

Most students start tutoring in Year 11/Year 12 (or equivalent), giving them enough time to prepare before applying to US universities. Starting earlier allows for a more gradual and less stressful process.

Neither test is universally easier. The ACT suits students comfortable with fast-paced, straightforward questions and strong science reasoning skills. Tutors can help determine which test aligns better with your strengths.

While tutors don’t handle full admissions consulting, higher ACT scores can significantly strengthen an application and improve overall competitiveness.

Ivy Education's tutors use official ACT practice tests, custom worksheets, exam-style questions, and digital platforms to ensure students prepare using realistic materials.

Most of our ACT tutoring students meet once per week, but frequency can be adjusted depending on goals, schedule, and test date.
