What TARA Tuition Involves

The TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions) is a non-subject-specific admissions test that assesses the reasoning and communication skills universities expect of their most capable students.

The TARA is a two-hour computer-based test divided into three modules: Critical Thinking (22 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes), Problem Solving (22 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes), and a Writing Task (one essay from a choice of three prompts, 40 minutes). The test is currently used by UCL for 2026 entry across a range of courses including Economics, Management Science, and Social Sciences, and from 2027 entry Oxford will require it for applicants to Economics, PPE, History, Human Sciences, and Psychology. Our TARA tuition is designed to help students understand how each module works, develop repeatable strategies for reasoning questions, and produce structured, persuasive essays under exam conditions.

How Our TARA Tuition Works

Our TARA tuition follows a structured, one-to-one approach tailored to each student's starting point, target university, and preparation timeline.

Because the TARA is not subject-specific, the focus is on sharpening transferable reasoning skills; skills that also strengthen interviews and personal statements. Throughout the tuition programme, our tutors will help students to:

  • Assess baseline reasoning and writing ability through an initial diagnostic
  • Identify which of the three modules — Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, or Writing — needs the most development
  • Teach question-specific frameworks and approaches for each module type
  • Practiseunder timed conditions that reflect the real test format
  • Review and refine performance through detailed feedback after each practice session

Lessons are delivered both in-person and online, allowing flexible scheduling and consistent support regardless of location.

Our Comprehensive TARA Tuition Programme

Our TARA tuition programme is designed to provide both structure and flexibility, ensuring preparation remains focused and efficient across all three modules.

What's included:

  1. Diagnostic assessment to identify current reasoning level and module-specific strengths
  2. Personalised lesson plan tailored to target universities, test sitting, and individual starting point
  3. Module-specific strategies for Critical Thinking question types, Problem Solving approaches, and essay structure
  4. Timed practice under exam conditions, reflecting the strict time limits of each
  5. Detailed feedback and progress tracking to support continuous improvement

For students who need it, TARA tuition can be complemented by broader admissions support, including personal statement guidance and interview preparation, ensuring the whole application is aligned and well-prepared.

Our Process

Tailored TARA Tuition – Step by Step

1. Initial Discussion

We begin with a consultation to understand your target university, chosen course, and preparation timeline. A diagnostic session then identifies current reasoning and writing ability across all three TARA modules, so we can prioritise the right areas from the outset.

2. Bespoke Study Plan

Your tutor designs a structured lesson plan based on your diagnostic results, test sitting, and target course. Each session is planned to build reasoning skills progressively, with time set aside for timed practice as the test approaches.

3. Skill Development by Module

Through one-to-one sessions, students develop the critical thinking frameworks, problem-solving strategies, and essay structures required for each part of the TARA. Tutors provide live feedback and help students internalise approaches rather than rely on memorised formulas.

4. Timed Practice & Mock Sessions

Students work through practice questions and full timed modules to build familiarity and resilience. Tutors review results carefully, identifying patterns and refining technique before the real test window.

5. Final Preparation & Admissions Integration

In the final phase, tutors provide advanced practice simulations and essay coaching to ensure students approach all three TARA modules with confidence, clarity, and a clear strategy.

TARA Tuition - Frequently Asked Questions

The TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions) is a new computer-based admissions test developed by UAT-UK. It was first introduced for UCL applicants for 2026 entry and will be required by Oxford from 2027 entry onwards for courses including Economics, PPE, History, Human Sciences, and Psychology.

UCL requires the TARA for several courses, including Economics, Management Science, Sociology, and Social Sciences. From 2027 entry and onward, Oxford will require it for Economics, PPE, History, Human Sciences, and Psychology. Students should always check the specific course pages at their target universities to confirm requirements.

The TARA lasts two hours and consists of three modules, each 40 minutes long: Critical Thinking (22 multiple-choice questions), Problem Solving (22 multiple-choice questions), and a Writing Task (one essay chosen from three prompts). Calculators and dictionaries are not permitted.

The TARA does not test subject knowledge — it assesses reasoning ability, logical thinking, and written communication. Success depends on how clearly and efficiently you can analyse arguments, solve novel problems, and construct a persuasive essay under timed conditions.

We begin with a diagnostic across all three modules, build a tailored study plan, teach module-specific strategies, run timed practice sessions, and review performance in detail after each session to drive targeted improvement.

Most students benefit from starting structured preparation at least 8–10 weeks before their test sitting. Oxford applicants must sit in October, so early preparation in the summer term of Year 12 or early Year 13 is recommended.

Yes. For students applying to Oxford Economics or PPE, or UCL Economics, TARA tuition can be complemented by our full admissions consultancy — covering personal statements, university selection, TMUA preparation, and interview support — ensuring all parts of the application are aligned.

It is ideal to begin working with a university admission consultant at the start of Year 12. This allows for careful planning of subject choices, academic achievements, work experience, and preparation for entrance exams or interviews. However, we also offer effective support later in the application process if needed.

Contact Ivy Education today to arrange a free introductory call. Our team will discuss your target universities, chosen course, and preparation timeline, and recommend the most appropriate support.
