Exam Boards & Qualifications
Not all GCSE Physics courses are the same. Each exam board sets its own paper structure, question style and mark scheme, and a tutor who knows your child's board inside out can make a real difference to their confidence and their grade. Whichever specification your child is sitting, we match them with a tutor who teaches it regularly and knows exactly what examiners are looking for.
Edexcel (Pearson)
A widely taught Physics specification in both state and independent schools, offered as Combined Science or as separate Physics. Its questions are set out in a clear, direct style, and it has a large archive of past papers to work through.
AQA
The most widely taken science specification in the country, sat as Combined Science: Trilogy or as separate Physics. Two Physics papers, each covering a defined set of topics, so students need to know which content sits in which paper.
OCR
OCR runs two distinct science suites, Gateway Science (A) and Twenty First Century Science (B), and they are not interchangeable. Schools choose one or the other, so the first thing we establish is which your child is sitting, then match a tutor who teaches it.
WJEC / Eduqas
The main board in Wales and used by a number of schools in England, with its own paper structure and assessment weighting, and a strong focus on applying physics to real-world contexts.
What Our GCSE Physics Tuition Covers
Energy
Energy stores and transfers, work done, power, efficiency, specific heat capacity and the national and renewable energy resources…
MoreLess
Energy stores and transfers, work done, power, efficiency, specific heat capacity and the national and renewable energy resources. Higher tier adds specific latent heat and more demanding efficiency calculations.
The physics here is approachable, but the marks sit in describing transfers precisely rather than loosely, and in choosing the right equation from the sheet. Our tutors drill both, because vague answers about energy being "lost" are one of the most common ways students give marks away.
Electricity
Current, potential difference and resistance, series and parallel circuits, IV characteristics, mains electricity, power and the National Grid…
MoreLess
Current, potential difference and resistance, series and parallel circuits, IV characteristics, static electricity, mains electricity, power and the National Grid.
Circuits are consistently ranked by students as the hardest part of GCSE Physics, because a question can change entirely depending on where a component sits. Our tutors teach a repeatable method for working through any circuit rather than memorising particular arrangements, which is what makes unfamiliar questions manageable.
Particle Model of Matter
Density, changes of state, internal energy, specific heat capacity and latent heat, and the behaviour of gases under pressure…
MoreLess
Density, changes of state, internal energy, specific heat capacity and latent heat, and the behaviour of gases under pressure, with the separate course going further into pressure and volume relationships.
This topic connects directly to Chemistry, which helps students who are secure there and exposes gaps in those who are not. Our tutors make the link explicit, and give plenty of practice at the calculation questions, which carry more marks than students expect.
Atomic Structure & Radioactivity
The development of the atomic model, isotopes, types of nuclear radiation, half-life, contamination and irradiation, and nuclear fission and fusion…
MoreLess
The development of the atomic model, isotopes, alpha, beta and gamma radiation, half-life, contamination and irradiation, and nuclear fission and fusion on the separate course.
Much of this is recall, which makes it one of the more efficient places to pick up marks. The exception is half-life, where students need to work confidently with decay both graphically and numerically. Our tutors separate the two demands so neither gets neglected.
Forces
The largest topic on the course: scalars and vectors, Newton's laws, motion graphs, momentum, stopping distances and pressure…
MoreLess
The largest topic on the course: scalars and vectors, resultant forces, Newton's laws, distance-time and velocity-time graphs, momentum, stopping distances, terminal velocity and pressure in fluids at Higher tier.
Because it is so broad, students often know parts of it well and other parts not at all, which shows up as inconsistent paper scores. Our tutors map exactly which sections are secure before building a plan, rather than revising the whole topic again from the start.
Waves
Transverse and longitudinal waves, the wave equation, reflection and refraction, the electromagnetic spectrum and its uses and dangers…
MoreLess
Transverse and longitudinal waves, the wave equation, reflection and refraction, the electromagnetic spectrum and its uses and dangers, with lenses, black body radiation and sound added on the separate course.
Ray diagrams are where marks are most often lost, because a diagram that is roughly right earns nothing. Our tutors teach students to construct them accurately with a ruler and to label them in the way examiners expect.
Magnetism & Electromagnetism
Magnetic fields, electromagnets, the motor effect and Fleming's left-hand rule, with generators and transformers on the separate course…
MoreLess
Magnetic fields, electromagnets, the motor effect and Fleming's left-hand rule, with the generator effect, loudspeakers and transformers added on the separate course.
This topic is usually taught late in Year 11 and is therefore the one most often under-revised. It is also highly learnable, so it is frequently the quickest win we find when a student comes to us close to their exams.
Space Physics
The life cycle of stars, the solar system, orbital motion, red shift and the Big Bang — on the separate Physics course only…
MoreLess
The life cycle of stars, the structure of the solar system, orbital motion, red shift and the evidence for the Big Bang. This content sits on the separate Physics course only, and not on every board, so the first thing we check is whether your child needs it at all.
It is largely descriptive and rewards clear, ordered explanation, particularly the stages of a star's life cycle. Our tutors make sure students can sequence and justify each stage rather than list the terms.
Required Practicals
A defined set of practicals runs through the course, and questions about them appear in both papers…
MoreLess
A defined set of required practicals runs through the course, and questions about them appear in both papers. Students are asked about method, apparatus, variables, safety and sources of error, sometimes for a practical they carried out a year earlier.
Our tutors revisit each one so the detail is secure, including the ones a school may have demonstrated rather than run. These are reliable marks and a common gap, which makes them an efficient place to spend revision time.
Equations & Maths Skills
Physics carries more maths than any other GCSE science, and a number of equations must be recalled from memory rather than looked up…
MoreLess
Physics carries more maths than any other GCSE science: rearranging equations, standard form, significant figures, unit conversion, and reading gradients and areas from graphs. A number of equations must also be recalled from memory rather than taken from the sheet.
Students who understand the physics regularly lose marks in the arithmetic or the rearranging, and those marks are among the quickest to recover. Our tutors separate the two skills so it is clear which one is actually costing the grade.
Extended Response & Exam Technique
The six-mark questions reward a structured, linked explanation rather than a list of facts, and calculations reward showing full working…
MoreLess
The six-mark questions carry a large share of the paper and reward a structured, linked explanation rather than a list of facts. Calculation questions reward setting out working clearly, so that method marks survive an arithmetic slip.
Our tutors teach students to read command words precisely, plan a response before writing, and work through full papers under timed conditions with feedback against the real mark schemes.
Pushing for Grades 8 and 9
At the top of the mark scheme, examiners look for precise terminology and confident application of familiar physics to unfamiliar contexts…
MoreLess
At the top of the mark scheme, examiners look for precise terminology, fully linked chains of reasoning, and the confidence to apply familiar physics to a context a student has never seen before.
For students targeting the highest grades, or heading towards A Level Physics and engineering courses, we match them with tutors who work at this level regularly and can stretch them beyond what a classroom has time to cover.
Whatever the goal, your family is not working it out alone.
Whether your child is rebuilding confidence, pushing from a 6 towards an 8 or 9, or preparing for a resit, we will find the right tutor and stay involved right through to results day.
How We Pick Your Perfect Tutor
We start by understanding your child and their goals.
Every GCSE Physics student is in a different position, whether that is rebuilding confidence after a tough mock, pushing from a grade 6 towards an 8 or 9, or working through the required practicals and the maths that Physics demands. After an initial discussion with you, we assess exactly what your child needs, including their exam board, whether they are taking Combined Science or Separate Physics, and where they are losing marks, before we begin the search for the right tutor.
We select the tutor best suited to your child, academically and personally.
With a clear picture of the student, we approach the GCSE Physics tutors we feel are right for the assignment. We weigh up each one based on their availability, experience with the relevant exam board, qualifications, and manner, so that the match works for both your child's learning goals and your family's requirements.
We introduce you to your handpicked tutor.
We send you a shortlist with all the information you need to make a confident decision. If you would like advice on which tutor would suit your child best, our education team is always reachable by phone or email and happy to talk it through with you.
Your tutor builds a bespoke GCSE Physics plan.
Over the first few sessions, your child's tutor assesses their current level across the syllabus and identifies the specific topics holding their grade back, whether that is the equations, the required practicals or the longer explanation questions. Your child then receives a clear plan built around their target grade, their exam board and the areas that will make the most difference, with progress reviewed as they go.
We stay in touch throughout with regular check-ins.
From the first session to the final exam, our Client Services team keeps in contact with you. Consistent progress matters to us, and we make sure the family, the student and the tutor are all happy with how the tuition is going.
