Combined Science or Separate Chemistry

Two routes through the same subject, with different demands. Our Chemistry tutors teach both, and will pinpoint where your child is losing marks on their specific course.

Most students study Chemistry as part of Combined Science, while those planning to take A Level Sciences or Medicine often take it as a separate GCSE. The content is largely the same, but Separate Chemistry goes into more detail in some areas, and the amount of revision needed can vary quite a bit. If you are not sure which course your child is taking, we can find out for you.

Combined Science

Two GCSEs, awarded as a double grade

The route most students take. Chemistry, Biology and Physics are studied together and awarded as two GCSEs with a double grade, from 9-9 down to 1-1. The Chemistry content is reduced compared with the separate course, but it still includes the calculation-heavy topics that many students find challenging, alongside the demands of three different sciences.

Our tutors focus on the Chemistry papers specifically, identifying which topics are causing difficulties and helping students strengthen them from the foundations up, so revision time is spent where it can make the most difference.

Separate Chemistry (Triple Science)

One full GCSE in Chemistry

A standalone Chemistry GCSE with additional content beyond the Combined course, usually taken by students heading towards A Level Chemistry, Medicine or a science-related degree. The extra material is manageable, but it comes alongside two other full science GCSEs and goes into greater depth in some areas.

Our tutors cover the additional Separate Chemistry content in full and help students build the knowledge and exam skills they need for the higher grades and the step up to A Level.

What we cover

Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table

Atoms, elements and compounds, the development of the atomic model, electronic structure, isotopes, and the groups and trends of the periodic table. These are the foundations for much of the course, so a good understanding here helps students with bonding, moles and reactivity later on.

Bonding, Structure and the Properties of Matter

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, dot-and-cross diagrams, giant and simple structures, states of matter, polymers, and the nanoparticle content on the separate course. Understanding how structure affects properties helps students tackle unfamiliar questions rather than relying on memorised answers.

Quantitative Chemistry

Conservation of mass, relative formula mass, moles, reacting masses, concentration, limiting reactants, and percentage yield and atom economy at Higher tier. This is a common stumbling block in Chemistry, and targeted support can make a significant difference when a student’s grade has stopped moving.

Chemical Changes

Reactivity series, extraction of metals, acids, alkalis and neutralisation, pH and titrations, salt preparation, and electrolysis of molten and aqueous compounds. These topics become easier when students understand the processes involved rather than relying on recall alone.

Energy Changes

Exothermic and endothermic reactions, reaction profiles, bond energy calculations, and the cells and fuel cells content on the separate course. A relatively short topic that can provide reliable marks when students are confident with the key concepts and calculations.

The Rate and Extent of Chemical Change

Rates of reaction, collision theory, catalysts, calculating rate from graphs including tangents at Higher tier, reversible reactions, equilibrium and Le Chatelier's principle. Students can lose marks here when they find the graphs or unfamiliar wording difficult, even when they understand the underlying chemistry.

Organic Chemistry and Chemical Analysis

Crude oil, fractional distillation, alkanes and alkenes, cracking, and on the separate course alcohols, carboxylic acids and polymers, alongside purity, formulations, chromatography and the tests for gases and ions. A clear understanding of the key reactions and precise use of terminology are important throughout.

Required practicals

A defined set of required practicals runs through the course, and questions about them appear in both papers. Students may be asked about method, apparatus, variables, safety and sources of error, sometimes for a practical they carried out much earlier. Our tutors revisit each one so the important details are secure.

Maths skills in Chemistry

Chemistry carries more mathematical content than the other sciences: moles and reacting masses, concentrations, percentage yield, gas volumes, rates from graphs, standard form and significant figures. Students can understand the chemistry and still lose marks in the arithmetic, which is often something that targeted practice can improve quickly.

Extended response and exam technique

The six-mark questions reward a structured, linked explanation rather than a list of facts, and calculation questions reward showing your working clearly. Our tutors help students read command words carefully, structure their answers and work through full papers under timed conditions, with feedback against the real mark schemes.

Exam Boards and Qualifications

Not all GCSE Chemistry courses are the same.

While most students take AQA science, not all do. Topic order, practical requirements, paper structure and mark schemes all differ from board to board, and OCR runs two separate science suites that are not interchangeable. A tutor who teaches your child's exact specification every week makes a measurable difference. When you enquire, we ask which board and which route your child's school follows, and match accordingly.

AQA

The most widely taken science specification in the country, offered as Combined Science: Trilogy or as separate Chemistry. Two Chemistry papers, each covering a defined set of topics, so students need to know which content sits in which paper. Our tutors work with these papers every week.

Edexcel (Pearson)

A popular alternative with its own topic numbering, paper structure and set of core practicals. Our Edexcel tutors know how its calculation questions are worded and where its mark schemes differ from AQA, and prepare students for that specification rather than a generic one.

OCR

OCR runs two distinct science suites, Gateway Science (A) and Twenty First Century Science (B), and they are not interchangeable. Schools choose one or the other, so the first thing we establish is which your child is sitting, then match a tutor who teaches it.

WJEC / Eduqas

Taken widely in Wales and by a number of schools in England, with its own paper structure and assessment weighting. Our tutors know where students lose marks by revising to the wrong specification, and keep the work aligned to the one your child will actually sit.

IGCSE Chemistry

We also tutor Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry and Cambridge (CAIE) IGCSE Chemistry, including the Core and Extended tiers and Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences. The IGCSE route is assessed entirely by final exams and handles practical work differently from the UK GCSE, most often through an alternative to practical paper, so preparation needs to be planned for that specification specifically.

GCSE Chemistry Tuition: Online and In-Person

We provide one-to-one online GCSE Chemistry tuition to families across the UK and internationally.

We are based in Fulham and can provide in-person tutors across West, South-West and Central London. Chemistry also works particularly well online: lessons run over video with a shared whiteboard, so tutor and student can work through a mole calculation line by line, build a dot-and-cross diagram together, balance an equation or annotate a rates graph in real time. Because the working is visible as it happens, a tutor can see exactly where a method breaks down rather than only seeing the wrong final answer.

Students taking Separate Chemistry usually sit two Chemistry papers, each covering a defined portion of the specification. Students taking Combined Science sit two Chemistry papers alongside papers in Biology and Physics, and receive a double grade covering all three. The exact structure and timings vary by board, and your child's tutor will build the plan around their specific specification.

Quantitative Chemistry asks students to hold a chemical idea and a mathematical process in mind at the same time, and it is usually taught once and then assumed. If the underlying relationships are not secure, students fall back on memorised recipes that break as soon as a question is phrased unfamiliarly. Our tutors rebuild the reasoning rather than the recipe, which is why this is often the fastest single route to a better grade.

More than in the other sciences. Moles and reacting masses, concentrations, percentage yield and atom economy, gas volumes, rates from graphs, standard form and significant figures all appear in Chemistry papers. Students frequently know the chemistry and lose the marks in the arithmetic or the setting out, and those are among the quickest marks to recover with targeted practice.

Each board sets a defined list of required practicals that students carry out during the course, and questions about them appear in the written exams. Students are asked about method, apparatus, variables, safety and sources of error, sometimes for a practical they completed a year earlier. It is a reliable source of marks and a common gap, so our tutors revisit each practical as part of the revision plan.

You need to do both. There is plenty of content to learn, from the reactivity series to tests for gases and ions, but understanding it is just as important. GCSE Chemistry questions often ask students to apply what they know to unfamiliar situations, calculations or graphs rather than simply recall a fact. Good revision combines learning the content with regular exam practice, so students become comfortable applying their knowledge as well as remembering it.

This is one of the most common reasons families come to us for Chemistry. Following a worked example on the board is much easier than producing the method yourself under time pressure, and exam questions apply familiar chemistry to unfamiliar contexts. Our tutors diagnose whether the issue is knowledge, application, calculation or exam technique, because the fix is different in each case.

Top grades come from precise terminology, explanations that link cause to effect in full, and calculation work set out clearly enough that method marks survive a slip. Reaching that level usually needs stretch beyond what a classroom has time to provide. For students targeting an 8 or 9 we match them with tutors who work at this level regularly.
