School Entry

When they are carefully prepared and encouraged, students can rise to the challenge of the entry examinations and interviews with confidence and poise. As well as helping students gain entry to their school of choice, careful preparation for these examinations can also give students a strong grounding for the rigours of the curriculum they will be entering in to.

We understand that different children have different needs, and we are able to offer a variety of able and experienced tutors to reflect this. Many of these are qualified teachers with strong knowledge of the schools commonly targeted and expertise in specific areas of the curriculum. Depending on the need of the child in question, we are pleased to be able to provide a tutor to suit the individual.

It has been our distinct pleasure and privilege to see a vast number of children gain entry into their school of choice, and seeing their success is a strong motivator for us as a company. The schools we have helped children to gain entry to at primary level include Alleyn’s, Cheltenham Ladies College, Colet Court, Downe House, Dulwich College, Eton, Francis Holland, KCS Wimbledon, Latymer, Marlborough, St Paul’s and St Paul’s Girls’, Thomas’s, Westminster Under, and Wycombe Abbey.

"Alastair and his team provide a wealth of knowledge and insight into entrance exam procedures, which was gratefully received as this was our first time going through such a process. The tutor provided was not only encouraging and enthusiastic but also understanding and patient and always had time to talk through any queries we had. The support on interview preparation was top notch, and arranged at quite short notice, and helped to calm our nerves when we felt anything but calm. When we first decided to go down the route of putting our son in for 8+ exams at some of London’s top boys’ schools we hadn’t realised how stressful the process would be. Alastair was always responsive, composed and gave much needed practical advice along the way. We really couldn’t have asked for more. We will be back when it is time to go through the process all over again with our second child!"

Pre-Tests

Some schools, including Eton and Harrow, require that students take a pre-test in Year 6 or Year 7 in order to gauge the individual’s ability level before the 13+ is taken in Year 8. Pre-tests look at the cognitive ability of a student and, if successful, the school will make a conditional offer dependent on the 13+ results.

It can be difficult for students to prepare for the pre-tests as practice papers are not available, however we can provide tutors with the necessary experience to clarify exactly what the tests themselves will cover, as well as providing insight into what the schools are looking for from candidates.

For further information about the pre-tests, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us and we would be delighted to discuss this in more detail.

Entry at 13+

13+ is a key intake for some of the most competitive, prestigious secondary schools in the country; as such, expectations are set very high. The 13+ exams take place in either January (London Day Schools) or June (Common Entrance) and are for students currently in Year 8 looking to start at a new school in Year 9. The subjects examined depend partly upon the school in question; the London Day Schools produce their own examination papers in Maths, English, Science and French, whereas the Common Entrance papers, produced by ISEB (Independent Schools Examination Board), are used by many other schools.

The Common Entrance includes papers in a range of other subjects on top of the core areas, including Humanities and possibly Classics. If you would like to discuss more specific examination requirements at 13+ for a particular school, please do get in touch.

"We definitely want Louise for half term. A is really enjoying working with her she seems to be able to strike the perfect balance of getting the work done in a way that A almost does not realise he is learning and sees it as fun, which with a very full on school environment at the moment prepping for 8+ is exactly what we need."
